Oyster Mews – VELFAC V200

Transforming a Waterfront Property

Occupying a prominent corner position in Old Portsmouth, 1 Oyster Mews enjoys sweeping views across Camber Dock, the Emirates Spinnaker Tower and the former Land Rover BAR headquarters. The brief for this refurbishment and extension project was simple. Create a contemporary home that made the most of its exceptional waterfront setting.

Before the transformation, the property featured small window openings. These restricted natural light and limited views of the harbour. To address this, the design team added a ground-floor extension to increase living space. They also created a first-floor extension with roof terraces. French doors on both the first and second floors provide direct access to these outdoor areas.

Maximising Light and Views

The project team specified VELFAC 200 composite windows and doors throughout the property. Their slim frames and large glazed areas bring more natural light into the home. They also frame uninterrupted views of the harbour and city skyline. In addition, the contemporary design complements the architectural improvements. The system also delivers excellent thermal performance and long-term durability.

A dramatic two-storey cantilevered bay window forms the centrepiece of the design. This striking feature creates a strong architectural focal point. It also draws the surrounding landscape into the living spaces. As a result, the home feels brighter, more open and more connected to its waterfront location.

A Contemporary Family Home

The refurbishment included a high-specification kitchen, four luxury bathrooms and underfloor heating throughout. Together, these features provide the comfort and practicality expected from a modern family home.

Architect Carl Leroy-Smith led the transformation of 1 Oyster Mews. His design has turned an overlooked property into one of the area’s most distinctive homes. Through careful design and the use of VELFAC 200 glazing, the house now takes full advantage of its remarkable setting. Residents enjoy panoramic views from every level.

What Our Clients Say

Mr Hewitt, United Kingdom

When ordering the windows, we made numerous changes along the way. They were very quick to update the order and help with questions along the way. Their installation team was good and were able to overcome a few quirks in our existing house. I was doing the following on decoration works after the windows were fitted. A couple of aspects made it difficult to finish up around the newly installed windows. Shims and metal plates were left in need of grinding back in order to get a plasterboard back up against the window internally. This was perhaps inevitable however, due to the old Victorian check reveals in the brickwork and some very out of square existing openings. On the whole we are very pleased.

Westcott installed my Velfac windows and front door at the end of 2025. The company was very helpful from the point of first contact, advising on technical matters, and timescales. The installers were professional and polite, and meticulous in cleaning up at the end of each day. The new windows look far bigger than the old ones, and let in so much light. I’m glad that Westcott suggested the pine interior finish – they make a 1980s semi look very stylish and Scandi!

Lance, Farnham

I had 18 windows and doors replaced with Rationel and Westcott Construction were the recommended supplier. Josie was very helpful while we got the exact specification sorted out, and was always quick to reply on email. The fitters were very friendly and helpful, and the attention to detail was excellent. Everyone turned up when they said they would and completed the job on time. This is a very well organised company who it has been a pleasure to work with.
