Oyster Mews – VELFAC
Occupying a prominent corner position in Old Portsmouth, 1 Oyster Mews enjoys far-reaching views across Camber Dock, the Emirates Spinnaker Tower and the former Land Rover BAR headquarters. The brief for this refurbishment and extension project was clear: to maximise the property’s connection to its remarkable surroundings and create a contemporary home that fully embraced its waterfront setting.
The original property featured small, restrictive window openings that limited natural daylight and failed to capitalise on the impressive views available from the site. A comprehensive programme of works was therefore undertaken, including a ground floor extension to increase living space and a first-floor extension incorporating roof terraces accessed via French doors on both the first and second floors.
A key element of the design was the specification of VELFAC 200 composite windows and doors throughout the property. Renowned for their slim sightlines and expansive glazed areas, the VELFAC 200 system was selected to maximise natural light and frame uninterrupted views of the harbour and city skyline. The contemporary aesthetic of the glazing complements the architectural enhancements while delivering excellent thermal performance and long-term durability.
The project also features a striking two-storey cantilevered bay window, creating a dramatic focal point and further strengthening the connection between the internal living spaces and the surrounding landscape. Combined with a high-specification kitchen, four luxury bathrooms and underfloor heating throughout, the result is a modern family home designed around comfort, light and views.
Designed by architect Carl Leroy-Smith, the transformation of 1 Oyster Mews has elevated the property from an overlooked dwelling to one of the most distinctive homes in the area. Through thoughtful design and the strategic use of VELFAC 200 glazing, the property now makes the most of its exceptional location, offering panoramic views that can be enjoyed from every level.
