Farfield – VELFAC V200E

Featuring on both the front cover of the August 2024 issue of Self Builder and Homemaker Magazine and in the March 2023 issue of  Grand Designs magazine, Farfield is a contemporary transformation of a dated, 1960’s bungalow.

Designed by Paul Cashin Architects and built by Westcott Construction, this breath-taking project is situated in South Downs National Park.

The Farfield House project has completely transformed an existing 1960’s bungalow. By extending and redeveloping the original building it has been possible to create an architecturally stunning four bedroom modern home, totally unrecognisable from the original.

Paul Cashin says “Through careful analysis, it was possible to reuse the building, making alternations to the structure which has totally reimagined it, whilst also offering a sustainable and cost-effective solution for this build project. ”

The existing gabled roof was removed from the house and adjacent garage and replaced with a striking flat roof across the entire dwelling. By upgrading the glazing to the VELFAC 200E system, the slim frame enhances the amount of natural light into the home and expands the surrounding views of the National Park. A VELFAC RIBO entrance door was chosen for its’ cotemporary style and high performance features. When paired with VELFAC windows, they create a uniform aesthetic.

Additional space was created through a partial first floor extension. To take advantage of the views available, the living space and a generous open planned kitchen have been located upstairs, with all sleeping accommodation on the ground floor. To minimise the effects of solar gain in warmer months a Brise Soliel is placed over the large, south facing windows on the first floor.

Very professional from start to finish. Our windows install has just completed and were very happy with work done by Westcott Construction. The attention to detail and care taken was exceptional. Several very large/heavy windows were installed and they are millimetre perfect. The Westcott employees take a real sense of pride in their work. I would recommend without reservation.

When ordering the windows, we made numerous changes along the way. They were very quick to update the order and help with questions along the way. Their installation team was good and were able to overcome a few quirks in our existing house. I was doing the following on decoration works after the windows were fitted. A couple of aspects made it difficult to finish up around the newly installed windows. Shims and metal plates were left in need of grinding back in order to get a plasterboard back up against the window internally. This was perhaps inevitable however, due to the old Victorian check reveals in the brickwork and some very out of square existing openings. On the whole we are very pleased.

This company contacted me two years after installing our windows to check whether we had any problems. I said they were fine except I had never been able to open one of the air vents. The next day, they happened to be working in the area and came round ready to replace the vent. In the event, that was not necessary and they applied silicon spray to all the vents to loosen them. They are now all open. This is exemplary customer service from a company that had originally installed them quickly and efficiently with little fuss.
