Farfield – VELFAC V200E

Transforming a 1960s Bungalow

Featured on the front cover of the August 2024 issue of Self Builder and Homemaker Magazine and in the March 2023 issue of Grand Designs magazine, Farfield is a contemporary transformation of a dated 1960s bungalow.

Designed by Paul Cashin Architects and built by Westcott Construction, this striking home sits within the South Downs National Park.

The Farfield project completely reimagines the original bungalow. The design team extended and redeveloped the existing building to create a stunning four-bedroom home. As a result, the finished property looks entirely different from the original structure.

A Sustainable Approach

Architect Paul Cashin explains:

“Through careful analysis, we identified opportunities to reuse much of the existing building. By making targeted changes to the structure, we completely reimagined the property while delivering a sustainable and cost-effective solution.”

Maximising Light and Views

The project team removed the original pitched roofs from both the house and adjoining garage. They then introduced a striking flat roof across the entire property.

To increase natural light and maximise views of the National Park, the team specified the VELFAC 200E system throughout the home. The slim frames allow more daylight into the interior and create a stronger connection with the surrounding landscape.

In addition, the team selected a VELFAC RIBO entrance door for its contemporary appearance and high-performance design. When combined with VELFAC windows, the door helps create a consistent and modern aesthetic.

Designed Around the Landscape

The extension also introduced additional living space through a partial first-floor addition. To make the most of the surrounding views, the architects positioned the main living areas and a generous open-plan kitchen on the upper floor. Meanwhile, all bedrooms occupy the ground floor.

To improve comfort during warmer months, a brise soleil provides shading across the large south-facing windows. As a result, the design helps reduce solar gain while maintaining high levels of natural light.
