Court House – Solarlux & VELFAC V200E

Sustainability & Performance

Thermal efficiency was a fundamental design driver for Court House. The design team developed the project using Passivhaus principles and a fabric-first approach. They prioritised the building envelope to reduce energy demand before considering mechanical systems.

South-facing glazing is carefully positioned to maximise winter solar gain. Meanwhile, architectural canopies provide shade during the summer months. This prevents overheating while maintaining daylight levels. The homeowners also chose to include a wood-burning stove with a full chimney, adding both visual appeal and supplementary heating.

The VELFAC V200E system plays a significant role in the building’s performance. Its composite aluminium and timber construction combines external durability with internal thermal efficiency. High-performance glazing, thermally broken frames and airtight detailing contribute to excellent U-values, low air permeability and long-term energy efficiency. In addition, the consistent frame depth and precise manufacturing support the overall fabric integrity of the building.

As a result, the home achieves EPC A status. It delivers high comfort levels, lower running costs and strong environmental performance without compromising architectural clarity.

Glazing Strategy – VELFAC & Solarlux

Glazing was central to achieving the architects’ vision of clean lines, strong proportions and generous natural light.

Westcott Architectural Glazing supplied and installed the VELFAC V200E system. The team selected it for its slim sightlines, strong thermal performance and consistent external appearance. The uniform frame profile allows fixed, opening and large-format units to sit harmoniously within the façade. Consequently, the design maintains the disciplined geometry of the barn-inspired elevations.

The composite construction uses aluminium externally for durability and low maintenance. Internally, timber provides warmth and a natural feel. This combination aligns with the architectural vision and the homeowners’ preference for natural materials.

VELFAC does not offer a bi-folding door within its range. Therefore, after consulting with Westcott Architectural Glazing, the project team selected Solarlux as the complementary manufacturer. This decision ensured consistent quality and performance across all glazing elements.

The team chose the Solarlux Combiline bi-folding door system for its precise engineering, smooth operation and build quality. Designed for large openings, the system enables the main living spaces to connect seamlessly with the garden. When fully open, it creates a continuous transition between the interior and exterior. It also maximises the site’s orientation and access to sunlight.

Combiline’s thermally broken aluminium profiles, high-performance glazing and refined threshold detailing support both energy efficiency and accessibility. Even at wide openings, the system maintains stability and weather performance. As a result, homeowners can enjoy the space throughout the year. Its slim frame design also complements the VELFAC windows and preserves visual consistency across the building.

Together, the two systems create a cohesive glazing strategy. They deliver high performance, durability and architectural precision while reinforcing the building’s contemporary barn aesthetic. Ultimately, they provide outstanding comfort and usability.

Tony

We commissioned Westcott Architectural Glazing to replace our house front door. This is not a cheap process, so we decided to search for the exact style, accessories and colour finishes we wanted. The sales team were helpful at every stage of the design process. Installation time arrived, and we had an outstanding fitting team, who were professional, helpful and courteous, keeping us informed of options and decisions throughout the day. It’s a pity they were not able to do fine finishing, such as adding trims where the door frame meets our interior plasterwork, but overall we were very happy with the fit-up experience and the completed Installation. Very happy to recommend.

Thank you to you and your team for completing this job. The windows are great and you did a fantastic job getting them in on one day! We would be happy to recommend you to others.

We had all our windows replaced and installed VELFAC using Westcott. They were incredibly helpful and went the extra mile to ensure we could get what we were looking for. They worked alongside our builders who were renovating the rest of our property and in the main this worked well.
