Converting a Traditional Barn

Located in a picturesque village on the edge of the Chichester Channel, Rotherwood Barn shows how carefully specified glazing can transform a traditional agricultural building. The project converted an unused barn into a contemporary holiday cottage. The result is a bright and welcoming retreat designed for modern family living.

A key goal of the conversion was to maximise natural light while retaining the character of the original structure. To achieve this, the project team specified VELFAC windows and doors throughout the property. These features bring daylight deep into the interior and create a strong connection with the surrounding countryside.

Maximising Light and Views

The slim frames and large glazed areas of the VELFAC system suit the barn’s contemporary design. They also open up wide views of the landscape and increase the sense of space throughout the accommodation.

Full-height glazed doors provide direct access to the outdoor areas. At the same time, carefully positioned windows frame views of the countryside and bring natural light into every room.

Creating a Contemporary Layout

The design team reconfigured the internal layout to create an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area on the ground floor. They also introduced a generous entrance space and a wet room.

Upstairs, the former loft now contains two guest bedrooms and a spacious family bathroom. Additional rooflights bring more daylight into the bedrooms and circulation spaces. As a result, the property feels bright and welcoming throughout the day.

Together with the VELFAC glazing, these features create a light-filled environment that enhances the holiday accommodation and improves everyday comfort.

Blending Traditional and Contemporary Design

Externally, matching larch cladding helps retain the character of the original barn. It also works seamlessly with the contemporary glazing.

The completed conversion delivers a modern rural retreat where high-performance windows and doors play a central role in the design. The project successfully combines traditional materials with the needs of contemporary living.
