Court House – Solarlux & VELFAC V200E
Sustainability & Performance
Thermal efficiency was a fundamental design driver for Court House. Developed using Passivhaus principles and a fabric-first approach, the building envelope was prioritised to reduce energy demand before considering mechanical systems.
South-facing glazing is carefully positioned to maximise winter solar gain, while architectural canopies provide shading during summer months, preventing overheating while maintaining daylight levels. A wood-burning stove with full chimney was included by personal choice, adding both aesthetic and supplementary heating value.
The selected VELFAC V200E system plays a significant role in the building’s performance. Its composite aluminium/timber construction combines durability externally with thermal efficiency internally. The system’s high-performance glazing, thermally broken frames, and airtight detailing contribute to excellent U-values, low air permeability, and long-term energy efficiency. The consistent frame depth and precision manufacturing also support the overall fabric integrity of the building.
The result is a home that achieves EPC A status — delivering high comfort levels, reduced running costs, and strong environmental performance without compromising architectural clarity.
Glazing Strategy – VELFAC & Solarlux
Glazing was central to achieving the architects’ vision of clean lines, strong proportions, and generous natural light.
Westcott Architectural Glazing supplied and installed the VELFAC V200E system, selected for its slim sightlines, strong thermal performance, and consistent external aesthetic. The uniform frame profile allows fixed, opening, and large-format units to sit harmoniously within the façade, maintaining the disciplined geometry of the barn-inspired elevations.
The composite construction — aluminium externally for durability and low maintenance, timber internally for warmth and tactility — aligns with both the architectural language and the homeowners’ desire for natural materials inside the home.
For the large rear opening, VELFAC’s system does not include bi-folding doors, and following expert advice from Westcott Architectural Glazing, Solarlux was selected as the complementary manufacturer. This recommendation ensured continuity of quality and performance across all glazing elements.
The Solarlux Combiline bi-folding door system was chosen for its precision engineering, smooth operation, and exceptional build quality. Designed for large-span openings, the system enables the main living spaces to connect seamlessly with the garden. When fully opened, it creates a continuous transition between interior and exterior, maximising the site’s orientation and sunlight.
Combiline’s thermally broken aluminium profiles, high-performance glazing, and refined threshold detailing support both energy efficiency and accessibility. The system maintains stability and weather performance even at wide openings, ensuring year-round usability. Its slim frame design complements the VELFAC windows, preserving visual consistency across the building.
Together, the two systems provide a cohesive glazing strategy: high performance, durability, and architectural precision — reinforcing the building’s contemporary barn aesthetic while delivering outstanding comfort and usability.

Adam was great – fixed our door in about 5 minutes!

What makes this company stand out is outstanding customer service from start to finish. I had VELFAC 200 Energy windows installed for a new self-build so attention to detail was paramount. Composite Windows came to site multiple times before, during and after fitting to ensure the product was perfect. When one of the larger units was difficult to close, they sent their engineers to adjust it but still determined it wasn’t perfect, so replaced the entire unit. Its the service we all would hope companies strive to deliver but we typically settle for less. Composite windows really did deliver on my project. They have a great team in the office and at site. I would definitely use them in subsequent projects.

We had all our windows replaced and installed VELFAC using Westcott. They were incredibly helpful and went the extra mile to ensure we could get what we were looking for. They worked alongside our builders who were renovating the rest of our property and in the main this worked well.
