Everyday activities introduce moisture into the air. Cooking, showering, drying clothes, and even breathing all add humidity to your home. In properties where ventilation isn’t keeping pace with that moisture, it has nowhere to go — so it settles on cold glass.

This is why condensation is often worse in winter. The greater the temperature difference between inside and outside, the more likely moisture-laden air is to condense when it hits a cold surface.

Why Condensation Can Appear on New Windows

One of the most surprising things for homeowners is seeing more condensation after installing new windows. It feels counterintuitive — surely better windows should solve the problem?

In reality, this often means the opposite: the windows are doing their job.

Modern double- and triple-glazed windows are designed to be airtight and energy efficient. They keep heat in and draughts out. Older windows were far leakier, which allowed warm, moist air to escape unnoticed. Once that escape route is removed, humidity levels inside the home can rise unless ventilation habits change.

In other words, condensation on new windows usually isn’t a defect — it’s a sign that moisture which used to leave the house invisibly is now being trapped inside.

This is particularly common after renovations, where new glazing is installed alongside improved insulation and draught-proofing. The building becomes more efficient, but the ventilation strategy hasn’t yet caught up.

What It Means When Condensation Appears on the Outside of New Windows

Seeing condensation on the outside of your windows can be alarming, but it’s almost always a good sign.

Highly efficient glazing prevents internal heat from escaping through the glass. On cold, damp mornings, the external pane stays cool. If the outdoor air temperature reaches its dew point, moisture forms on the outer surface of the glass.

This only happens when heat retention is excellent. In simple terms, the window is insulating so effectively that the outer pane is no longer being warmed from inside the house.

External condensation is harmless and temporary. It usually clears once the sun rises or air movement increases.

Why Persistent Condensation Shouldn’t Be Ignored

What Actually Helps Reduce Condensation

There’s no single fix for condensation — it’s usually best managed through a combination of ventilation, moisture control, and correctly specified glazing.

Ventilation is key. Opening windows regularly, even briefly, allows moisture-laden air to escape and fresh air to enter. Extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms should always be used during cooking and showering, and trickle vents should be left open unless there’s a specific reason not to.

Controlling moisture at source also makes a big difference. Avoid drying clothes indoors where possible, use lids on pans when cooking, and consider a dehumidifier in rooms that regularly feel damp.

Glazing quality matters too. Modern double- and triple-glazed units with low-emissivity coatings help keep internal glass surfaces warmer, reducing the likelihood of condensation forming in the first place. Frame design is equally important, as poorly insulated frames can create cold spots even when the glass performs well.

Condensation and Aluminium Windows: What Makes the Difference

Aluminium windows are increasingly popular for their slim sightlines, strength, and contemporary appearance. Like any material, they need to be properly designed to perform well thermally.
